PLASKETT, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. The Plaskett Fire, which began August 26 in the hills east of the Plaskett coast, reached 100% containment according to the latest incident statistics published by CAL FIRE. The state incident page lists 30,124 acres burned in Monterey County and an incident-data update of October 1, 2026. The U.S. Forest Service has separately published an emergency access order covering designated lands, roads and trails affected by the Plaskett and Timber fires.
Full containment does not mean every fire-damaged road or trail is open. The state’s containment figure is not a declaration that every hazard is gone, and a forest closure is a distinct land-management decision.
What happened at the Plaskett Fire?
CAL FIRE identifies the starting location as Forest Road 23S10 east of Los Burros Road, near Plaskett, with the incident beginning on August 26. The responsible agency was the U.S. Forest Service’s Los Padres National Forest, not CAL FIRE. At the end of September, incident managers reported repairs to suppression lines, road grading and continuing monitoring of areas affected by fire.
CAL FIRE’s October 1 update marks the fire 100% contained. That status is the last published summary identified in the source, not a live October 30 inspection. The cause was listed as under investigation; California58 is not alleging that any person or activity has been found responsible.
What does the closure order say?
The Forest Service’s revised Order 05-07-51-26-11 was made effective on September 26, 2026 and gives an ending date of January 31, 2027 unless rescinded or modified earlier. The order covers specified areas of the Monterey Ranger District, including forest roads and trails in the region affected by both fires.
Travelers must not assume that all routes near Plaskett Ridge Road, Coast Ridge Road, Nacimiento–Fergusson Road or the surrounding backcountry can be used just because fire containment reached 100%. The precise boundary is defined by the order and its map. A private access exemption, if applicable, is not a general exemption for sightseeing or recreation.
What about Highway 1 and beaches?
Highway traffic restrictions, evacuation instructions and National Forest land closures are separate systems. A Forest Service emergency order does not itself prove that Highway 1 is closed on October 30. Check the live Caltrans QuickMap for the state highway, the Monterey County emergency portal for evacuation information, and the current U.S. Forest Service notices for individual roads, campsites and trails.
California State Parks and federal campgrounds have separate operating rules; do not assume a campground is open simply because public roads permit travel past its entrance.
How does this differ from earlier coverage?
California58 previously reported on the August disruption of the Highway 1 corridor. This update concerns the later containment milestone and the separate September forest-access order, a different stage in the incident’s development.
